Probabilities of conditionals: updating Adams

چکیده
Abstract The problem of probabilities conditionals is one the long‐standing puzzles in philosophy language. We defend and update Adams' solution to puzzle: probability an epistemic conditional not a proposition, but under supposition. Close inspection how triviality result unfolds concrete scenario does provide counterexamples view that are probabilities: instead, it supports conclusion violate standard theory. This call into question theory per se; rather, calls for more careful understanding its role: propositions; as do express propositions, their subject laws. argue both best understood terms dynamics supposing, modeled restriction operation on space. version suppositionalist allows us connect Thesis widely held restrictor semantics conditionals. address two common objections view: relevant ‘probabilities only name’, giving up propositions puts at disadvantage when comes interpreting compounds. Finally, we some putative can be diagnosed fallacies probabilistic reasoning: they arise from applying laws which invalid them.

A dams's thesis about indicative conditionals is that their assertIlability goes by the conditional subjective probability of the consequent given the antecedent, in very much the same way that assertability normally goes by the subjective probability of truth.' The thesis is well established; the remaining question is how it may best be explained. The nicest explanation would be that the truth...
متن کاملThe Probabilities of Conditionals Revisited
According to what is now commonly referred to as "the Equation" in the literature on indicative conditionals, the probability of any indicative conditional equals the probability of its consequent of the conditional given the antecedent of the conditional. Philosophers widely agree in their assessment that the triviality arguments of Lewis and others have conclusively shown the Equation to be t...

The Method of Maximum (relative) Entropy (ME) has been designed for updating from a prior distribution to a posterior distribution when the information being processed is in the form of a constraint on the family of allowed posteriors. This is in contrast with the usual MaxEnt which was designed as a method to assign, and not to update, probabilities. The objective of this paper is to strengthe...

As examples such as the Monty Hall puzzle show, applying conditioning to update a proba bility distribution on a "naive space", which does not take into account the protocol used, can often lead to counterintuitive results. Here we exam ine why. A criterion known as CAR ("coarsening at random") in the statistical literature character izes when "naive" conditioning in a naive space works. We ...
